Learning how to surf isn’t like learning how to play baseball. But like baseball, it’s easier to learn when you understand the lingo. Here are some notable surfing words to use or avoid the next time you’re out surfing a 24-foot wave in Sheboygan, Wis.
DO NOT SAY:
Dude or gnarly
DO SAY:
- Stoked: full of enthusiasm
- Barrel: when the water peaks over your head while you’re surfing inside the wave
- Tubed: riding a wave inside the tunnel of water so the wave is breaking around you
- Big Bottom Turn: turning your board at the base of the wave
- The Elbow: the huge Sheboygan pier that bends into a little sandbar and follows it back to the beach; can produce extremely tall waves on a strong south swell; the most surfed spot in the Great Lakes
- Bitchin’: cool, awesome
- Longboard: a long surfboard with a rounded nose; will give beginner surfers much more success when starting off surfing in freshwater
- Break point: also known as “surf break,” a permanent obstruction such as a rock or headland that causes a wave to “break,” and form a barreling wave
- The Lip: the tip of the wave as it breaks
- Mahalo: the Hawaiian word for “thank you”
